Ethnic minority communities are historically under-served in research (NIHR, 2020). The ‘Diverse Voices’ project aims to increase representation in research which addresses ethnic health inequalities, as an urgent priority.

Ethnic minority groups in the UK experience inequalities in outcomes, access and experience of health services including, maternity and mental health, compared to White groups (NHS, 2021). The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted how stark these inequalities are, as ethnic minority communities in the UK had higher COVID-19 mortality risks than White populations (IoHE, 2020).

The complexity of this issue requires consideration of variation between and within ethnic groups, and the interplay of factors such as deprivation, environmental influences, health-related behaviours, and structural racism (The King’s Fund, 2023).

Research into health inequalities is important to pave the way for actionable measures to prevent and manage ill health in ethnic minorities.
